Greek life- it’s not everything

I’ve recently noticed articles in the Iowa State Daily about the Greek community and how it’s supposed to represent the best aspects of the student population. That it might do but from my many interactions and conversations it seems like people in that community are a bit pretentious. It’s almost like if you aren’t involved in the Greek community you’re missing out on some special society that you’re going to regret for the rest of your life.

There are plenty of outstanding students and members of the college community that aren’t involved in Greek life and could care less. There are lots of other ways to give back to your community and many members who volunteer and do other things aren’t Greek. I also know of plenty of Greek students who only volunteer and donate blood because they feel pressured by their fraternity or sorority and not because they want to.

I’m going to stop here because I don’t feel like going further with this and my basic point’s proven. There’s nothing wrong with being involved in the Greek system on campus. My problem is with the media portrayal that puts Greek life on a pedestal that makes it seem like they’re better than you. There’s nothing wrong with being an excellent person who isn’t attached to an exclusive society. Feel free to be yourself. My friends are my fraternity. I’m a member of BNT, est. 1987 .
