While I’d still watch a 9th season of Smallville [The transition to digital tv's made it possible to watch it free in HD when it airs so of course I'll watch! And the special effects are really good too!], I probably wouldn’t retoole my work schedule so I could watch it during it’s Thursday night timeslot like I do most of the time. For a few seasons I’ve been really disappointed with the Lex/Clark drama and I’m glad she’s finally outta the picture. I think a 9th season of Smallville would be pushing it though. The show’s done well and Clark’s finally developing into the Man of Steel. So to make a 9th season of Smallville and not put him in the cape and tights would be a bit ridiculous. And since they’ve said in the past no tights no flight, they’ve kinda screwed themselves for that since they never made Clark wear glasses. I for one would be really annoyed if they tried to introduce glasses and the Superman costume without letting years pass of Clark wearing glasses BEFORE the cape. It’s a great show but it’s time for it to start ending. Plus, the title’s Smallville. It can’t really start to focus on Clark’s life post Superman alter ego. Also, they’ve done the “monster of the week” think at the very beginning and there’s not a whole bunch of new ideas to make it reasonable enough to give Clark and alter ego and go back to the “monster of the week” style format. It’d just be too much. I hope they end Smallville while it’s still really good with the new developments of Clark’s character and not turn it into some really lame series that leaves a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth about how the show went down. And don’t do the huge cliffhanger thing in hopes of making a spinoff or reviving it in the future. Sure it’s a great way to be dramatic and possibly ensure your future jobs but it’s an even better way to piss off millions of viewers (Joan of Arcadia anyone?)
On the other hand it has setup Doomsday and the Justice League or Legion or whomever they are. I’d love for a spinoff about the Justice League to happen! I’d definitely watch that. You hear that CW execs? MAKE A JUSTICE LEAGUE SERIES. And it can be like Smallville, following the characters up to the point where they donned their costumes and set out to make a difference in the world. Also, I’d love a spinoff centered around Chloe. She’s not in cannon Superman lore and I find her character fascinating and the things she has to deal with worth it to turn it into a show. She’s been in Clark’s shadow and has had her life turned inside out so many times because of her relationship with him. There is some GREAT storyline potential there.
